Caroline Buchanan - Arizona USA Nationals

2 days of racing, 42/106 degree temperatures and about 14L/3.5G of fluid over the weekend.

I knew leading into this event that I was in for a tough weekend. Not only was the heat a shock to the body but getting back on a flat ABA start hill felt as though I had bricks strapped to my bike.  I drove from my base in California to Arizona on Friday to step straight out of the air-conditioned car for practice, my jaw dropped, I was in the middle of a desert…cactus and all! Coming from from freezing weather conditions in Norway last weekend I did enjoy how easy it felt to warm up.

Day 1 of racing I tried to pace my self slightly in the heats to conserve some energy for the final. In the final I had a good start but got shut down by the USA BMX National #1 girl pro Dominique Daniels. I fought back and crossed the line in 4th.

Day 2 was a much better day. I had slightly adapted to conditions and dirty dusty clothes, a sore dusty throat and a constant sweat started to feel normal.  I got out of the gate well again but this time was able to shut USA'S Alise Post and Argentina’s Gabriella Diaz down. Sitting in 2nd position into the first turn I reeled Dominique Daniels in around the track making a move in the last turn to place 2nd closely behind Dom.

Next stop back to Europe in 10 days for the BMX Supercross World Cup/Olympic qualifier in Holland.
