Aussies been and gone signifies the start of a glorious “off season” for the majority of surf athletes, for us pool rescue athletes on the other hand, it means World Trials are quickly approaching and the time to crack down on training is present! At the moment a normal training week consists of six swim, one run, once box and two gym sessions. After a few weeks off, getting back in the pool was a bit of a struggle (the cold morning’s definitely don’t help!!) but the sluggish feeling wore off quicker then I expected and getting back into my training groove wasn’t to bad.
SLSA’s new partnership with Body Science Australia means that recovery has become a bigger part of my training regime. After having a few consults with the BSC staff and learning about all the different products and what they can do for me, protein has become a bigger focus in my recovery, to ensure I’m able to back up from session to session. The Body for Women range is my favourite and has become a big part of my diet!

I’m currently pushing through some pretty rough shoulder injuries which definitely make training a little bit harder but with the help of the boys down at Surf Life Physio, it’s something that we’re managing each week. Sometime’s it gets pretty tough jumping in the pool for 2 hours knowing that every stroke is going to hurt more then the previous one but I’d nearly say all swimmers go through it at some point so it’s all about managing it the best we can and re-evaluating after Worlds in November.

After having a little bit of a race on the weekend at a local skins meet at Runaway Bay it was time to sit down and plan some goals and map out my training plan from here to trials. My main goal at the moment is to make the Open team for Worlds so I’ll be doing everything I can to make sure that when I get on the blocks in August I’ve done everything possible to give myself the best chance of achieving that!
Until then it’s going to be a lot of hard work, long hours, orange tape and mental work but no doubt it will all be worth it and hopefully all the hard work will pay off!
After all, if it is to be…it’s up to me!
Until next time,
Christina xx
