Matt: First off, big congratulations on being selected in the Team for London?
Anna: Thankyou it is a childhood dream come true!
Matt: What does it mean for Anna Flanagan the person, to be representing her country at the biggest sporting event in the world the Olympics?
Anna: I have always wanted to represent my country in one way or another and am so proud to have the opportunity to represent Australia and add to our rich sporting history.
Matt: Olympics are only on every 4 years, which is a long time in high level sport, was there ever any doubt in your mind that you wouldn't be going to the Olympics this year?
Anna: A spot is never guaranteed and 4 years ago I definitely wasn’t thinking that I would make the Olympic team!
Matt: Has it fully sunk in yet, that you are going to the Olympics in a month’s, or do you still have to pinch yourself to make sure it is real?
Anna: I still have to pinch myself, and until we walk out onto the pitch in our first game I will probably still be pinching myself!
Matt: How far back can you remember dreaming about representing your country at the Olympics?
Anna: I think the Olympic goal really hit home during the Sydney Olympics watching Cathy Freeman win her final and being in the stadium to experience that moment at such a young age, I remember going home and cutting out all her photos from newspapers etc. wanting to be just like her!
Matt: What would you say to someone of similar age as you were back then, with the same aspirations?
Anna: That anything is possible. I really believe if you think it can happen it will!
Matt: What will be involved now for you and the Hockeyroos until London?
Anna: We have a couple of practice matches in Perth before we leave on the 16th to London, where we play some more practice games before tapering off for our first match.
Matt: Biggest thing you think the team can improve on before London?
Anna: Perfecting some of our attacking and defensive structures
Matt: What sport besides hockey are you looking forward to watching at the Olympics?
Anna: If we had the chance I love watching athletics but only if it didn’t impact our recovery time!
Matt: Favourite cheat meal?
Anna: Baked goods…. We have a lot of good bakers in the team!
Matt: Do you have a favourite sport/team you support?
Anna: Tennis- Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer
Matt: Which celebrity do you think you most look like, I would have said Megan Gale, but obviously with you being better looking of course?
Anna: Haha! I wish! That’s a tough one… too tough I have nothing!
Matt: Anything you would like to say to the fans?
Anna: I hope you enjoy the Olympics, find our game times on the hockey Australia website and show your support!! Go Roos!
We wish Anna and the Hockeyroos all the best for the 2012 London Olympics, they will no doubt make us all proud!
