Jane Moran - Post Test Event and World League

20120508 The Weekend Australian

Matt: It has been a whirl wind last month for you with the Australian National Water Polo League Final Series, the test event in London and the World League how has the body handled that?

Jane: We’ve luckily been travelling with a physio, so I’m holding up really well. Just getting daily treatment and doing lots of rehab. We’ve got plenty of down time, so that’s one of the best forms of recovery!

Matt: Landing in London, what was the atmosphere like, could u get a sense that it is getting close the Olympic Games? Is the city a buzz?

Jane: We didn’t spend anytime in the city – just driving through on our way to our accommodation. The Olympic park is at Stratford, and it is all systems go there. I think I took photos of every possible stadium/arena/facility. It was really exciting seeing the water polo pool for the first time, and the Olympic village. At first glance it looks like there’s heaps more to be done, but on review, its all pretty underway, just landscaping and aesthetics.

Matt: You got to play in the stadium and pool where the Olympic Games will be held, how does it stack up?

Jane: It was awesome, especially in front of a full house! The spectators were crazy – so many brits who have never seen a water polo game before, but they were all there with loud voices and keen to be a part of the Olympic lead up.

Matt: After the two international events how do you think the Stingers are progressing leading into London?

Jane: The win against the USA in London put our minds at ease, and then beating the Chinese in Japan, with two of our players resting due to illness (only giving us 3 subs for the whole game) really raised the bar, and our confidence. We were 6-2 down early in the game, so to come back from that was amazing.

Matt: You have been dealing with a shoulder injury which will require surgery after the Olympics, how have you been maintaining it to allow you to continue to play?

Jane: Surprisingly my shoulder does better on tours than it does back at home. It’s the long swim sessions and the long shooting training that bugs it the most, but when we’re on tour our training is capped due to pool space and availability. Having a physio here 24/7 is also a massive help.

Matt: Your favourite and least favourite thing about international travel?

Jane: I hate hand washing my clothes – kind of a necessity when living out of a suitcase for months on end. The best thing is experiencing the different cultures, foods, and of course shopping (if we can squeeze it in).

Matt: What was the highlight of the trip for you so far?

Jane: The win in London in front of 5000 people was the definite highlight. Now to repeat it at the same venue in a couple of months time. We still have World League Super Finals in Changshu so hopefully there will be a highlight to come out of that.

Matt: Bunch of girls all together overseas, is there a funny story you can share with us?

Jane: Surely you’ve heard the saying “what goes on tour stays on tour”?? :) Today is our first day in China so we went to the supermarket to stack up on water. Four of the girls bought a 24 bottle slab of lemonade accidently…Im sure it ill disappear in the weeks we’re here.

Matt: Where to from here for you?

Jane: We have 2 weeks at the Shanghai Institute of Sport then to Changshu for the World League Super Finals. Then back home on the 5th of June, and the Olympic team is announced on the 7th of June.
