Kris Porthill - Post Nabba International/Pre Southerns

20

Matt: Congrats on taking out the Nabba Class 1, how did you feel you looked?

Kris: I was happy to be back on stage and my conditioning was pretty good. I know i still need more size, so i am hoping to put on some more after this show. I did this show to help get some more exposure for myself here on the Gold Coast, so I think I was maybe a kg heavier than in 2010 as the last 2 years has been more focused on getting my business up and running back home in Australia.

Matt: You have recently changed to Nabba after dominating the WFF in both Australia and Overseas, how has it been stepping up to the non weighted Nabba class?

Kris: Like I said, its hard to be some real competition in a NABBA overall being under 100kg for class 1 (I was 91 on Sunday) So I need to put on a few more kg ASAP!!!

Matt: You are known for your freaky conditioning, is it a tough mental battle, in terms of now being up against bigger physiques and sacrificing some of that conditioning for bit more mass or do you just focus on conditioning?

Kris: I have to use my best assets for these 2 shows. I know how to get hard. I am experimenting with some new methods.

Matt: Has your prep for this comp been any different to previous comp preps?

Kris: For WFF it was always about making weight (87kg) so i couldn’t carb up or really even eat or drink in some cases 12-24hrs prior to rego in the past. Now i have tried a 1 day carb up and this weekend i’ll try a 3 day carb up. Nervous about it but hopefully i’ll be a bit fuller as a result.

Matt: Give us an insight into your last week of prep, in terms of carb intake?

Kris: I usually don’t have carbs until the day of the show and it was only a hand full of cookies at best. It won me a universe and world title so it was hard to talk myself out of using that method. I followed that for the NABBA Vics and Nats in 2010 and eating chicken and lettuce on the morning of the show meant i was around 10-15kg lighter than the other guys, but i still won.

Matt: What has been your favourite thing to train in this comp prep?

Kris: When i was getting ready for the 2010 shows i was struggling to squat 4 plates. it was a mental barrier. Months out from this show i was doing 4.5 plates for 20 rep sets, so i love my heavy high rep squat sessions.

Matt: Have you been working on a certain body part for this comp?

Kris: My shoulders and back. I have been getting massage so i can get some more room to grow in my lats. it worked so i owe my massage therapist Chris Kinch a lot for that. Also have some new ways to target my medial heads of hamstrings and triceps.

Matt: Southerns this weekend, what can we expect from you?

Kris: Hopefully good conditioning and maybe 1 kg heaver than last weekend.

Matt: Who do you think is the biggest threat for this weekend?

Kris: Not sure who’s doing it. I’ll just do my best. I know i will be the smallest guy up there all ready. So i’m no real threat to anyone in those terms.

Matt: Best of luck at the Southerns.

Kris: Thanks, I will do my best and look forward to a very big off season to GROW!
