Kris Porthill - Post Competition Series

20

Matt: Take us through the Nabba show for you? The experience from your eyes? The new venue?
Kris: The show was great. I loved the new venue. I have fond memories of the southport rsl, so I thought it would be tough to match. But the way mark runs a show and the helpers are so great, I can’t wait to do it again. It was really great to be back on stage.

Matt: Congrats on taking out Nabba Class 1?
Kris: The class wasn’t too big, but I made sure i was as hard as i could be and as full as possible so who ever turned up I would do my best to give them some competition.

Matt: You were in the overall, was Jake a stand out winner in your eyes?
Kris: I really liked Phil’s look. He was great. Its hard to fully understand the judges sometimes. I know that NABBA is all about great shape and size, and Jake had that in spades. I knew i wasn’t a threat. But I could at least show people some real tight conditioning which would then expose any softness of the people who go for fullness over everything else. That said, Jake is a freak!!! And he is the guy that i imagine now every workout, every set, every rep. I’m chasing Jake now.

Matt: Comp prep can be a lonely time, did you have a training partner or do you prefer to train on your own?
Kris: I have the support of my girlfriend Linda to spot me on squats and presses and anything else that i need help getting an extra couple reps out. I don’t have a training partner, and i miss not having one. But living in china for 3 years made me very independent.

I have enough motivation to push myself to crazy levels. I imagine everyone else in my class out lifting me before i start my set. I then have to beat them. If i get an idea of something crazy to do, if i don’t do it, i let myself down. There was a reason i thought of it. It meant that that is what my mind said i need to do to my body right now to win!

But ultimately if it wasn’t for my partner, i wouldn’t be able to present what I do. She has been there from the start of my 7 show winning streak. I owe my Universe and world title to her support, patience and understanding.

Matt: How long before you are set to take stage do you head backstage? Do you apply more tan, how long would you pump up for? What tips would you give to competitors?
Kris: I usually lay down back stage with my legs up and don’t start getting ready until i see others in my class tanning up. I leave it to the last minute which kind of unnerves some people as they haven’t seen me yet and wonder why I’m so casual and confident about the show.

I carbed up for the first time this year, so now i need to pump up to make the most of the carbs. Up until this year i didn’t pump up as i had no carbs in me to help me get a pump. Now for next show I know what to do. I can’t wait to try it all out.

Matt: What was the highlight of your competition prep?
Kris: Not sure, I guess i enjoy the routine of it. But in the past i have preped in Shanghai away from everyone so no one knew how i looked, what i was doing or that i was even coming. So that was something i had to manage this time. I don’t really like compliments too much prior as i’m not sure how true they are. I like honesty and I like to know what people really think.

Matt: What where your cheat meals after the show?
Kris: I had a pizza with my partner Linda, WFF Class 2 winner John Albergo and his mum. I was so happy for his showing and how much he has improved. His win was an even better feeling than mine. I love to help people get in the shape of there life and John was. Watch out for him!

Matt: Do you get straight back into a diet, or do you ease back into it, giving yourself some leeway after a long preparation?
Kris: I’m back in to training again twice a day. I did my first leg session in 3 weeks. I was very weak. Struggled with 2.5 plates on the squat. that’s the part i hate most about competing, the long road back to heavy weights you used to lift. I’m up on 5000 cals a day now and aiming to put size on quick. I have a lot of weight to put on to be 100kg+ on stage next year.

Matt: Where to from here for you?
Kris: Well, that’s not finalised yet. I’m hoping that my win puts me back on the map and helps me get some more clients. I’m all ready getting bookings for contest prep for the Oct shows. So i’m looking forward to helping others. But May is looking tempting again. Love doing the southerns and going to Europe to for a couple international shows would be a great holiday for both Linda and I.
